Cancer Education Resources for Nurses
The Australian Government’s Strengthening Cancer Care initiative provided funding for a project to review cancer education for nurses – the resultant project is the National Cancer Nursing Education (EdCaN) project.   One of the outcomes of this project is a professional development framework which has been endorsed by the Cancer Nurses Society of Australia and the Chief Nurses of each State and Territory.

The EdCaN Framework has a broad population-based approach, enabling an understanding of nurses’ professional development needs in parallel to the needs of communities affected by cancer.  To support the implementation of the Framework, educational resources using a case study approach are being piloted and will be ready for public release in July 2009.  The intention is to improve outcomes for people affected by cancer by targeting the professional development of nurses and providing easily accessible evidence based resources to improve knowledge of cancer control.  All nurses, regardless of practice setting are likely to have contact with people affected by cancer and will therefore require some level of capability in cancer control. The project leads are Professor Sanchia Aranda and Professor Patsy Yates.
The resources will be available from the website www.cancerlearning.gov.au for further information please contact: Cathie Pigott, Project Manager at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or telephone (03) 9656 3561.
